Playing God — Hybrid Project
The Hybrid Project reflects on humanity’s pursuit of perfection and longevity, and on the shifting ethical boundaries that accompany advances in science and biotechnology. At the same time, the work examines changing ideals of beauty by questioning where natural beauty ends and artificial beauty begins.
Cowhide forms the physical and conceptual foundation of the series, referring to research carried out at Newcastle University in 2008, where scientists created cytoplasmic hybrid embryos by introducing human DNA into enucleated cow egg cells.
By bringing together the human and the animal, the natural and the artificial, Playing God explores a territory in which these distinctions become increasingly difficult to maintain. As our ability to alter, enhance and potentially extend human life grows, the work raises a fundamental question: at what point does the pursuit of perfection become the creation of something else?
