Asphalt Series
In the Asphalt Series, Lieverse paints monochrome portraits in oil on a surface of bitumen. During the process, parts of the material are set alight, allowing heat and fire to leave unpredictable traces across the surface.
The contrast between the carefully painted portrait and the uncontrolled intervention of fire is central to the work. Where painting is deliberate, fire introduces chance. It stains, disrupts and transforms the image, leaving marks that cannot be entirely anticipated or undone.
These imperfections become part of the skin of the portrait. Beauty and imperfection, control and surrender, creation and destruction begin to coexist within the same image.
Rather than concealing imperfection, the Asphalt Series allows it to shape the work. The portrait emerges not despite its imperfections, but through them.
